What You Need to Drive in South Africa as an American Visitor
Your US driving licence is accepted at Veloce — though we recommend bringing an International Driving Permit (IDP) as well, available from AAA for around $20. Not strictly required by us, but useful if you're stopped by traffic officers who may not be familiar with all US state licences. Minimum age 23 for the standard fleet, 25+ for supercars, no upper age limit. Licence must have been held for 2+ years. At pickup, bring your US licence card, passport, the credit card used for the deposit (in the lead driver's name), and accommodation or flight details. Additional drivers welcome — each must present their own documents in person. We verify identity via Smile ID and run a brief credit check via Experian. Process takes 10-15 minutes. Send documents via WhatsApp in advance to speed handover at the airport.
Left-Side Driving — What American Visitors Need to Know
This is the single biggest adjustment for American visitors: in South Africa, you drive on the LEFT side of the road. Steering is on the right side of the car. The gearstick is to your left. The indicator stalk is on the right of the steering wheel (windscreen wipers on the left). Most renters adapt within 30 minutes of driving — your hands and feet learn faster than your brain. The first 24 hours feel strange, particularly at junctions and roundabouts (which work the same as American intersections, just from the opposite direction). After day two, it stops feeling foreign. Practical tips: start in a residential area not a highway, don't drive jet-lagged, and stay alert at junctions. Speed limits are 120 km/h (75 mph) on motorways, 100 km/h (62 mph) on national roads, 60 km/h (37 mph) in towns. Google Maps works perfectly throughout South Africa.

Bookings are billed in South African rand; your bank handles the conversion at prevailing rates — typically a 1-3% currency conversion fee depending on your card. A 3-5% deposit applies at booking, capped at US$10,000 for top-tier vehicles, refunded after vehicle return. Customer service via WhatsApp (+27 76 916 9548) and phone (+27 66 213 1503) from 09:00 to 18:00 South African Standard Time. SAST is 6 hours ahead of US Eastern, 9 hours ahead of Pacific — so when we open at 9am SAST, it's 3am Eastern, midnight Pacific. We answer email enquiries within 4 hours during business hours, but emails arriving overnight US time will be answered during your previous afternoon. Airport delivery is free for rentals over 3 days at Cape Town International and OR Tambo. We can also collect from V&A Waterfront, Stellenbosch, or Franschhoek.
