What You Need to Drive in South Africa as a Dutch Visitor
Your Dutch (Netherlands) driving licence is accepted at Veloce — we recommend bringing an International Driving Permit (IDP, "internationaal rijbewijs") as a backup, available from ANWB for around €25. Not strictly required by us, but useful for roadside checks if you're stopped. Minimum age 23 for our standard fleet, 25+ for supercars, no upper age limit. Licence must have been held for at least 2 years. At pickup bring your physical Dutch licence, your passport, the credit card used for the deposit (in the lead driver's name), and flight or accommodation details. Additional drivers welcome — each presents documents in person. We verify identity via Smile ID and credit-check via Experian. Process is 10-15 minutes. Send documents via WhatsApp in advance to speed handover.
Left-Side Driving — What Dutch Visitors Need to Know
In South Africa, you drive on the LEFT — opposite to the Netherlands. Steering on the right, gearstick to your left, indicator on the right of the wheel (windscreen wipers on the left). Most renters adapt within 30 minutes; your hands and feet learn faster than your conscious mind. The first day feels unfamiliar, particularly at intersections and roundabouts (rotonde), which operate the same way but from the opposite direction. After 24-48 hours it stops feeling foreign. Practical tips: start in a residential area not a highway, avoid driving jet-lagged on the first day, and stay particularly alert at T-junctions. If you'd rather skip the adjustment entirely, our chauffeur service is available — popular for first-day arrival or for full Garden Route itineraries. Speed limits: 120 km/h on motorways, 100 km/h on national roads, 60 km/h in towns. Google Maps and Waze both work throughout South Africa.

The Garden Route (7-10 days): Cape Town to Hermanus, Mossel Bay, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, Tsitsikamma — a classic long-form road trip. We collect from Port Elizabeth or you drive back. The Cape Peninsula Day (1 day): Cape Town, Camps Bay, Chapman's Peak Drive, Cape Point, Boulders Beach (penguins), Simon's Town — the single most photographed loop in SA. Best in a convertible. Booking from the Netherlands
We accept all major Dutch and EU credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex). Bookings billed in South African rand; your bank handles conversion at the prevailing rate, typically with a 1-2% conversion fee. A 3-5% deposit applies at booking, capped at €9,500 for top-tier vehicles, refunded after vehicle return. Customer service via WhatsApp (+27 76 916 9548) and phone (+27 66 213 1503) from 09:00 to 18:00 South African Standard Time. SAST is the same as Central European Time in winter, one hour ahead in summer. So when we open at 9am SAST, it's between 8 and 9am in Amsterdam. Airport delivery is free for rentals over 3 days at Cape Town International (CPT — direct KLM flight from Schiphol) and OR Tambo (JNB).
